The Maasai Mara National Reserve is unequivocally one of Africa’s greatest wildlife destinations. Renowned for its exceptional population of lions, leopards, and cheetahs, it is perhaps most famous for hosting the dramatic spectacle of the Great Wildebeest Migration. But planning a trip here begs one crucial question: when is the absolute best time to go?
If your primary objective is to witness the Great Migration—over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebra plunging across the crocodile-infested Mara River—then the dry season from July through October is your prime window.
During these months, the grasses are shorter, which makes spotting predators significantly easier. The weather is relatively cool and dry, and the sheer volume of animals concentrated in the Mara is staggering.
August is generally the most reliable month to see river crossings. However, this is also the busiest time of year. Book at least 6-9 months in advance to secure the best camps near the river!
While the migration herd is generally down in the southern Serengeti during these months, the Maasai Mara is still spectacular. This period is often referred to as 'Lion Season' because the big cats are highly active.
The grass is lush and green following the short November rains, making it an absolute paradise for photographers. Plus, there are far fewer crowds than in August, meaning you often get sightings entirely to yourself.
These months bring the "long rains." Many people avoid traveling during this time, but the adventurous few who do are rewarded with lower rates, zero crowds, and spectacular dramatic skies perfect for photography. Just prepare for muddy roads and occasional afternoon downpours.
